Thandiwe Newton Short biography
Melanie Thandiwe Newton (born 1972) is a British actress. She made her film debut in 1991 with 'Flirting'. Newton gained wider recognition with her portrayal of the title character in 'Beloved' (1998) and subsequent roles in films such as 'Mission: Impossible 2' (2000), 'The Chronicles of Riddick' (2004), and 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (2006). For her performance in 'Crash' (2004), she won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. On television, she is critically acclaimed for her role as Maeve Millay in HBO's 'Westworld' (2016–2022), earning a Primetime Emmy Award in 2018. She also appeared in 'ER', 'Rogue', and 'Line of Duty'. Newton was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 for services to film and charity. Born in Westminster, London, to a Zimbabwean mother and an English father, she confirmed in 2021 that she would be reverting to her original first name, Thandiwe. She was married to filmmaker Ol Parker from 1998 to 2022, with whom she has three children. Newton is also a vegan and an advocate for various social and environmental causes.
