Mongeau gained initial fame on YouTube primarily for her candid and often controversial "storytime" videos. She has been open about having a strained childhood, stating on her MTV series that her parents "lacked parenting skills" and that she felt like she was raising them. She has also publicly stated that she is not on speaking terms with her biological family and was adopted by her best friend's family at age thirteen. She is openly bisexual.
