Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson (born May 13, 1986) is an English actor known for starring in both major studio productions and independent films, often portraying eccentric characters across a wide range of genres. Born and raised in the Barnes district of London, Pattinson's father, Richard, was a vintage vehicle importer, while his mother, Clare, worked at a modeling agency. He has two older sisters, Victoria and Elizabeth. Pattinson developed an early interest in music, learning piano and guitar from the age of four. At thirteen, he joined the Barnes Theatre Company, a local amateur theatre group, to overcome his shyness. During his teens, he briefly worked as a photo model and has been the face of Dior Homme fragrance since 2013. He is also active in philanthropy, supporting organizations such as the GO Campaign.
