Claire Catherine Danes (born April 12, 1979, in Manhattan, New York) is an American actress known for her immersive and complex portrayals of characters in film and television. She grew up in an artistic household; her mother was a painter and textile designer, and her father was a contractor and former architectural photographer. Danes showed a strong interest in performing from a young age, starting modern dance at age six and taking acting classes at age 10. After landing her breakthrough role, she moved to California and attended the Lycée Français de Los Angeles. In 1998, she enrolled at Yale University to study psychology, but she left after two years to focus on her thriving acting career. She is married to British actor Hugh Dancy, and they have three children.
