Rian Craig Johnson (born December 17, 1973) is an American filmmaker and screenwriter. Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, and raised in San Clemente, California, Johnson developed an early interest in cinema, citing Woody Allen's Annie Hall (1977) as a primary inspiration. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts, graduating in 1996. Before his professional breakthrough, he spent several years editing and making instructional videos while gathering financing for his debut feature. He is married to film critic and podcaster Karina Longworth.
