Sabine Schmitz Short biography
Sabine Schmitz was a German professional motor racing driver and television personality. She was the first woman to win a major 24-hour race overall and became a cult icon on television following her appearances on BBC's Top Gear.
Born in Adenau, Germany, Schmitz grew up in a family of hoteliers. She trained as a hotel manager and sommelier before embarking on a career in racing. Schmitz began racing in the late 1980s and quickly established herself as a talented driver. She won several championships in Germany, including the VLN endurance racing championship in 1998.
Schmitz gained international fame in 1996 when she became the first woman to win the 24 Hours Nürburgring, one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world. She won the race again in 1997, and went on to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other major endurance races.
In addition to her racing career, Schmitz was also a popular television personality. She hosted several motoring shows in Germany and the United Kingdom, including D Motor and Top Gear. Schmitz was known for her engaging personality and her expert knowledge of racing.
Schmitz died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 51.
