Asafa Powell Short biography
Asafa Powell is a Jamaican sprinter specializing in the 100 metres. He held the 100m world record from June 2005 to May 2008 with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, and his personal best is 9.72 seconds. Known for consistently breaking the 10-second barrier, he has done so 80 times as of July 2011. Powell competed in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning a gold medal and setting a world and Olympic record in the 4 x 100 metres relay in Beijing. He also earned medals at the World Championships (including a bronze in 100m and gold in relay in 2009) and Commonwealth Games. Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, he is the youngest of six sons born to ministers. Powell is known as a deeply religious man and an avid car enthusiast.
