Vagit Yusufovich Alekperov is an Azerbaijani and Russian businessman, the former president and the largest shareholder of the leading Russian oil company LUKOIL. He has a net worth of US$3 billion as of March 2024.
Alekperov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, on September 1, 1950. His father worked in the oilfields and inspired Alekperov to follow in his footsteps. Alekperov graduated from the Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute in 1974 and began working in the oil industry.
Alekperov quickly rose through the ranks and became a deputy minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the Soviet Union in 1990. In 1993, he became the president of LUKOIL, which has since become one of the world's largest oil companies.
